“IRIS GARDEN” offers the viewer a choice of kaleidoscopic images created by an object box containing either polorized material or lampworked glass pieces. The viewing chamber consists of an octagonal glass case, 2 1/2” x 8”, with two movable sections. The standard mirror arrangement creates a classic six point image. By rotating the position of first section, the viewer can modify the image to achieve either a “snowflake” or “star” formed in the center of the view,or by turning the eye piece end a “wreath” image is formed around the periphery of the view. Rotating the far end section tumbles the contents of the object cell.
The use of polarized light in kaleidoscopes is rare. Polarized lenses filter out light rays that would normally pass through and illuminate glass pieces commonly used in kaleidoscopes. This creates a dark background for the image because the light has been filtered out by the cross polarization of the lenses. However, when bi-refringent material is placed between the lenses, the light is bent (refracted) and therefore since the light rays are at a new angle to the lens, they can pass through and are seen as varied colors depending on the thickness of the bi-refringent material and the angle of the light ray. Rainbows are caused by the same principle of light rays being bent as they refract through raindrops in sunshine. The range of colors is caused by the light rays bending at various angles.
